Argue that, no, feminism is not dead Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Argue that, no, feminism is not dead - Essay Example Things such as child bearing and nurture are believed to be a hindrance to a womanââ¬â¢s productivity by the radical-liberalists. They therefore strongly advocate use of artificial means of reproduction, are usually pro-abortion and largely promote use of contraceptives. The other form of feminism is radical-cultural feminism; this group believes that women should embrace their femininity because it is their source of power. They encourage women to explore themselves deeper and find their wild self. According to their view, sex was predominantly a manââ¬â¢s field, but women should start taking control and norms such as pornography, subordination, rape should be eliminated. Unlike the radical-libertarian feminists who view reproduction as a means of tying women down, the radical-cultural feminists promote a different view. The view that, men are jealous of the reproductive responsibilities of a woman and therefore try to hinder it using technological means. One can be classified as a feminist if they believe that; women should have equal rights to men. Women should be allowed to hold an office that a man can hold; also women should be recognized by their talents and not their looks. In addition, they believe that, it is offensive for women to be given tasks based on their gender and that a feminist is not afraid to refer to herself as one (Shaw and Lee 12). I believe that feminism is not dead; to the contrary, it has actually become stronger as women seem more empowered in this generation. Feminism is not dead; if it was dead then there wouldnââ¬â¢t be so much effort to make it seem as if it is dead. The media and other conservative groups argue that feminism is long gone and women do not need it anymore because it does not speak for the majority of women. Whereas its polls show that, women advocate for ideas such as child and women health care, political offices for women, equal work pay, and an end to women violence and so on (Shaw and Lee 19). These are definitely feministsââ¬â¢ stands and goals and therefore the feminist culture is still strong (Valenti 11). In the recent wake of issues such as promiscuity, the rise in women crime and also man hating have all been blamed on feminism. It is now being said that women have been taught to depend on no one and especially not a man. This has therefore contributed to the issues such as crime, breakdown of families and high rates of divorce. If feminism was dead, then it means that these issues would be nonexistent. However, the fact that they are being blamed on feminism, it therefore goes to show that it is still ongoing (Valenti 12). Feminists encourage women to accept themselves as they are which contribute in enhancing their self esteem and image. This new found confidence is a threat to companies that benefit greatly from women who are always looking for ways to enhance their physical appearance. If feminism was dead, it would not be a threat to these organizations which prov es further that feminism is thriving. In conclusion, some might argue that feminism is dead because it is unpopular nowadays as compared to the earlier days when it started. It was a thing of white old ladies as commonly referred to and most young women are not championing with much gusto as before (Valenti 10). Journal It is now clear to me how feminism has changed the world, relationships and womenââ¬â¢s view, all at ago. When I first heard the word feminist, I thought they were a bunch of women who no longer want to embrace

Internet Use in the classroom - Essay Example There are changes that are taking in the design and delivery of the curriculum. There has also been change in the way classrooms are designed in light of the new emerging technology in the market. The design of the class room has been greatly affected by the ICT tools that are currently being used. There is redesigning of the space available for student. The arrival of more computers has complicated the design of the earlier classroom and the profound use of these computers in the learning process has required teachers to up with new classroom designs that will ensure that all students acre given the attention that they require. Creating of space in the classroom for the computer and the peripherals like printer and network connection, large monitors and other gadgets is one of the factors in the adoption of classroom space to the use of computers. This has necessitated the reevaluation of the how classroom activities and the learning experiences will work best in the course of learning. In the early year of use of ICT in school, there was creation of computers laboratory where acted as technology center or building which were dedicated of house to computer and their peripheral alone. This was different from the classroom atmosphere and therefore their management was different. Although this arrangement is slowly being done away with and new methods of integrated use of computer in the classroom adopted, there are still some schools which have remained to use it due to the challenge in the use of ICT in the classroom. The creation of 3D classroom reflects the new arrangement in the use of ICT in the classroom. This necessitates provision of central access facilities and a distribution network that is highly effective. There is a change that has started and that is ongoing on the design of the classroom and the adoption of ICT in the classroom. The integration o ICT material in the learning process has necessitated a

Its Time to Drain Lake Powell :: Glen Canyon Dams Environmental Essays
It's Time to Drain Lake Powell Many people know ââ¬ËLakeââ¬â¢ Powell as a fact of life. Since its creation in 1963, the reservoir, known as Lake Powell, is just there. Few people that are alive today have had the opportunity to see the true beauty of Glen Canyon, which rivals the Grand Canyon. Glen Canyon, equivalent to one hundred eighty river miles with dozens of side canyons, was flooded for the purpose of power and water resources. ââ¬ËLakeââ¬â¢ Powell also generates an enormous cash flow due to the tourism it receives. Although the ââ¬Ëlakeââ¬â¢ has a few reasons to remain in existence, there are many more reasons to drain it. The positive aspects of ââ¬ËLakeââ¬â¢ Powell are few yet noteworthy. Glen Canyon Damââ¬â¢s hydroelectric power-plant generates one thousand three hundred mega watts of electricity at full operation. That is enough power to supply three hundred fifty thousand homes. Glen Canyon Dam holds twenty seven million acre feet of water, which is equivalent to twice the Colorado Riverââ¬â¢s annual flow (Living Rivers: What about the hydroelectric loss?). One of the most valuable reasons for the dam to remain active is that ââ¬Å"Lake Powell generates four hundred fifty five million dollars per year in tourist revenue, without this cash inflow, gas-and-motel towns . . . would undoubtedly wilt, and surrounding counties and states would lose a substantial tax baseâ⬠(Farmer 185). These positive aspects are of no surprise considering they are the reason dams are built in the first place. The negative aspects of Glen Canyon Dam greatly exceed the positive aspects. The damââ¬â¢s hydroelectric power supply is only three percent of the total power used by the six states that are served by the facility. There is a surplus of power on the Colorado Plateau and with more and more power-plants being created in the western hemisphere, Glen Canyon Damââ¬â¢s power is not needed (Living Rivers: What about the hydroelectric loss). Although the ââ¬Ëlakeââ¬â¢ contains twenty seven million acre feet of water, one and a half million acre feet of water are lost yearly due to evaporation and seepage into the sandstone banks surrounding the ââ¬Ëlakeââ¬â¢ (Living Rivers: What about the water supply?). The loss of that much ââ¬Å"water represents millions, even billions of dollarsâ⬠(Farmer 183). If the government were to employ more water efficient irrigation practices, as much as five million acre feet of water per year could be saved.

Analysis and Review of ONans Short Novel, Last Night At...
Last Night At the lobster isnt your typical novel. It is a short, brilliantly written novel by Stewart ONan. I would consider this novel to be realistic fiction because of the story line it holds and the characters are average Americans that can be related to. Although this piece of literature isnt intended to be a poetical piece, the author uses elements such as symbolism and sound to make passages flow like a poem would. Set on the last day of business of a Connecticut Red Lobster, this novel tells the story of Manny DeLeon, a committed restaurant manager that is notified by corporate that his managed location is not meeting expectations and will close December 20. He is also informed that he will be assigned to a nearbyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As the blizzard hits the area around him, customers become sparse, and employees dont show up. Small but not slight, this novel is a concise, poignant portrait of a man on the verge of losing himself in his hope, job, and dream. Right in the opening of the book you instantly get good descriptive language and use of words to help paint a picture of the setting. For example, on page. 5 Scattered flakes drift down like ash, but for now the roads are dry. This is an example of figure of speech. Ash would propel from the sky slowly, for instance after a volcano eruption the thin ash flakes make their way down from the sky with no hurry to hit the ground. I love how within the first few words of the book, I wanted to read more because of the imagery in my head. As many consumers and employees witness, managers tend to gain more respect when working with their team as oppose to using their position to work against their team. Manny worked side by side with the people he supervised to maintain an enjoyable eating experience for his costumers. Stewart Oââ¬â¢Nan is able to make Manny DeLeonââ¬â¢s job intriguing and his character distinctive and ultimately tragic. Mannyââ¬â¢s personal life adds an aspect of drama, but certainly the main reason why the book held charm was because of Mannyââ¬â¢s nature. Conscientious and committed, Manny thinks of the restaurant as his own. He is also quite good at his job of managing his crew. Mannyââ¬â¢s pride of having

LGBT Hate Crimes and Suicidality Among a Population-Bases...
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Hate Crimes and Suicidality Among a Population-Based Sample of Sexual-Minority Adolescents in Boston Until 1973, the American Psychiatric Association regarded the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community as consisting of sociopathic individuals with personality disorders. Today, the stigma has lifted off of these individuals and relationships among the LGBTs are no longer crimes in the US and many other countries; however, select individuals have now taken matters into their own hands exercising differential justice in the form of transnational hate crimes against the social group. In the US alone, roughly one in five all its hate crimes are motivated by the victims sexualâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Classrooms, consisting of 9th-through-12th graders from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, were randomly sampled to complete the Boston Youth Survey. The correlation research study excluded schools that served adults, previously incarcerated students, suspended students, and severely disabled studen ts to minimize introduction of confounding variables. Participants in the Boston Youth Survey (BYS) were asked specifically with regards to their individual-level sexual orientation and suicidal ideation and attempts among other questions. Of the 2725 individuals sampled, 1878 completed the survey and were asked, on the sexual orientation item in the BYS questionnaire, to identify themselves with 1 of 6 categories that best described themselves: (1) completely heterosexual, (2) mostly heterosexual, (3) bisexual, (4) mostly homosexual, (5) completely homosexual (i.e., gay or lesbian), or (6) not sure. Respondents were then asked explicitly Have you seriously considered attempting suicide? and Have you actually attempted suicide? [within the 12 months preceding survey administration] with yes and no response options for those questions (Duncan Hatzenbuehler, 2014). To test their hypothesis, researchers then obtained LGBT hate crimes data with help from the Boston Police Department Community Disorders Unit and linked the community information to

Emotional Sensitivity And Video Game Engagement And Game...
Dr. Rachel Kowert (2014) and her colleagues conducted an experimental study that focuses on the emotional sensitivity (or ES) and its relationship with video game engagement and game-related friendships. ES refers to oneââ¬â¢s ability to notice emotional and nonverbal cues from people. What they found proved most of their earlier predictions: 1) People with higher ES reported a leading number of online friends, both offline and only online, than people with low ES 2) High ES players will have a larger number of friends in real time transferred to online environments than those with lower ES (Kowert 2014, p.2). Although this experiment had positive results and a basic understanding of one of the components that makes someone shy, there was still more that couldââ¬â¢ve been done to help better further their research. First, this wasnââ¬â¢t proven throughout a global population but only in Germany, so the data they have only suit that country and no other populations. Seco ndly, as said before, emotional sensitivity is one component of shyness that was used to determine the study. But then this means that the other components of shyness were not taken to account and therefore, can drastically change the outcome of the study. Because of these factors, itââ¬â¢s difficult to speculate the findings and calculate how people with shyness gain friends through video game interactions. On the other hand, Kowert has provided data on the subject and thus giving a starting point to this topic.Show MoreRelatedThe Impact Of New Social Media Technology On Young People1491 Words à |à 6 Pagesthe new social media technologiesââ¬â¢ impacting on young people in todayââ¬â¢s society?
